Maskiorovka

Upcoming
Between 2016 and 2017 German artist Tobias Zielony went to Kyiv and began to document the underground techno scene that had grown in the aftermath of the 2013 revolution. The title of the project 'maskirovka' refers to Russian warfare tactics, where special forces wore face masks to hide their identities. Alongside the series 42 photographs Zielony took in the Ukraine, was this flickering, overwhelming split screen (soundless) film made from 5400 images taken during his stay. He uses imagery from clubs, the street, news reports and TV screen grabs to create a portrait of a country’s reaction to politics and turmoil intertwined with rebellion and hidden freedoms. -Francesca Gavin
