Annika Strom originally made 'Ten New Love Songs' in Svalbard in the north of Norway, above the Artic Circle, where she had gone on a residency and was recovering from the heartbreak of an emotional breakup. The film focuses on the idea of the love song – itself motivated by emotional upheaval. She filmed ten people who crossed her path at the time singing love songs. This miniature portraits of people and their lives is accompanied by song that all play with the idea of love in some way. Strom has worked with text, film and performance, music being one of the underlying elements that knit together her narratives. - Francesca Gavin
