‘Local to Global’ is a video installation investigating the world of OneCoin, an alleged pyramid scheme based on a new cryptocurrency.
The installation comprises video and sound recorded at OneCoin recruitment events held at hotels in London, as well as appropriated footage from a concurrent BBC Panorama documentary investigating the OneCoin scheme.
Taking the form of a loop of testimonials, the work weaves together different voices of OneCoin members and ‘prospects’, interspersed with the affective cues of a corporate expo. The installation further situates the viewer in a hotel conference room, expanding the atmosphere of the documented event into the gallery space.
The testimonials narrate personal, often complex motives and aspirations for participating in the OneCoin scheme, highlighting a range of issues. Consumer desire and escapism; the promise of new technology and entrepreneurship; the economic hardships facing migrant communities.
Filmed on a spy pen camera, the artists lure towards ‘investigation’ is highlighted, raising difficult questions of power and consent in a con- temporary moment characterised by controversies over data privacy, leaks and cyber crime.
By constructing a complex picture of peoples participation in One- Coin, the work attempts to move beyond the binary and essentialist framings of an alleged pyramid scheme. Instead it seeks to question how OneCoin may be reflective or symptomatic of wider social and economic structures and pressures in the neoliberal economy.
