We the Ragamuffin

Set in Peckham and using a cohort of musicians and non actors essentially playing themselves, We the Ragamuffin is a breath of fresh air for when TV scheduling remains stubbornly white. On its first showing in 1992, it appeared in front of a full house and ended with raucous applause solidifying We the Ragamuffin’s place in Black British cinematic history. Although it was released two decades ago, it’s eerily prescient regarding conversations around gentrification with Henrique stating, “for the new urbanites the film served as a little window to a past they mostly weren’t around for...that’s how gentrification happens”. Available on Youtube and a number of other streaming sites it’s a highly recommended watch minus the subtitles which Henrique and the cast were never pleased about in the first place.
