Violent Onsen Geisha: 'Night Of Unclean Water'

Another excellent clip from Kingdom Of Noise, Violent Onsen Geisha’s “Night Of Unclean Water” seems, somehow, to sum up much of what makes Masaya Nakahara’s best-known project so unique, and so puzzling. Noise is one part of the equation with Violent Onsen Geisha, but also a completely unique approach to juxtaposition, collage, bricolage, cut-up, and remix – the opening of Que Sera Sera steals snatches from T. Rex’s “20th Century Boy”, a turntablist scratches away idly, and then Nakahara erupts with a minute of exhilarating junk-noise, before a drum machine and guitar click away in a bossa nova reverie. More than any other artist on this list, Nakahara embraced the possibilities of a postmodern, all-in-the-same-bag sensibility, but his approach wound much further back, to Dada and constructivism. It’s also well worth checking out his psych-splatter electronics outfit, Hair Stylistics.
