‘Our Jamaican Problem’ gives us an uncomfortable insight into long held beliefs and attitudes towards newly arrived migrants in post-war Britain. Despite a strained veneer of liberalism underpinning the news report - it relies heavily on racist tropes to explain away the plight of the Caribbean migrants whilst placating the native population. The newsreel courtesy of British Pathe is symptomatic of its time brazenly stating in the title sequence, “Nationwide concern at the influx of British West Indians who come in search of hope”. Perhaps the only redeeming feature of this five minute newsreel is the passionate speech of Bill Strachan towards the end who raises a passionate defence of immigration. An unpleasant watch but a must for anyone trying to make sense of Britain’s long history of coded racism.
