Nicholas Cage, of David Lynch’s Wild At Heart, has a song to sing for the baffled viewers of Japan. It is — much like Maria Von Trapp’s song — a song about his “favourite things.” These favourite things include “a blue-jean sea,” “a red-haired girl,” “a slow burning candle,” and Pachinko — which as far as I can tell is basically a Japanese game that’s analogous to a slot machine, and is the thing he’s advertising here. All those who’re wedded to the idea that Japan is “wacky,” “crazy” and so on ought to note that the wackiest thing about this ad is Nicholas Cage himself: an all-American national treasure. So far, so weird — weirder still when another ad in the Pachinko series sees him meeting triplets, and then sliding into a state of (sexual?) frenzy, so that everyone in the vicinity turns into triplets, too. Triplets are one further than Lynch usually goes, the double being more effective from a psychosexual standpoint. To be faced with one more of yourself is frightening, but it’s also close to the definition of true love; to be faced with two doppelgangers, or upwards of two, is only ever science fiction.
