Jenn Nkiru presents: Cycles

Zeinabu Davis’ ability to give space to black womanhood, intimacy and spiritual orisha worship within an experimental frame feels so good to witness on screen. Her confident interplay between live action, animation, spoken word, sound, music (featuring Miriam Makeba, Haitian accapella singers and trumpetist Clora Bryant) is a treat in it of itself.

The fact this is all anchored in the protagonist, Rasheeda Allen’s anticipation of her period reclaims this sacred space as one which is personal and relatable.
