Holly Herndon & Jlin (feat. Spawn): 'Godmother'

Dig around the internet and you'll see vague references dating a few years back to the possibility of Holly Herndon and Jlin working together. That came to thrilling fruition today with the reveal of "Godmother." A sharp 3 minute blast of garbled sound design and stealthily morphing visuals that will thrill some and scare the shite out of others.

(We're firmly in the former camp btw)

Issued through 4AD, "Godmother" comes with a detailed backstory revealing some two years work building an ensemble that includes developing the AI being Spawn. Speaking with the pride of a beaming parent, Herndon reveals the following:

" She is being raised by listening to and learning from her parents, and those people close to us who come through our home or participate at our performances.

Spawn can already do quite a few wonderful things. ‘Godmother’ was generated from her listening to the artworks of her godmother Jlin, and attempting to reimagine them in her mother’s voice.

This piece of music was generated from silence with no samples, edits, or overdubs, and trained with the guidance of Spawn’s godfather Jules LaPlace."

More info on Spawn and this project can be found over at Holly's site and we await further news on music from this ensemble in 2019.
