‘The Body’ was apparently Elle Macpherson’s nickname, but if you told me it was Pamela Anderson’s, I’d believe you. It’s hard to imagine Pamela Anderson ageing. She has a kind of quasi-mythical status in the popular imagination; she’s almost closer to an avatar of desire than a human. Gilford’s Connected stars Jane Fonda, who herself more or less invented the celebrity workout video, as a voiceover, while Anderson plays a spin instructor with the intelligence that’s given her career such longevity. These two women, who’ve been so closely associated with physical perfection, make this a compelling exploration of how ageing intersects with technological optimisation.
