Apparat Organ Quartet: 'Konami'

The reconditioned keyboards, the vocoder, the retro video game title: it could so easily all be so much kitsch. But as with all of Jóhannsson's work, there are fathomless depths barely hidden. The entire junkshop Kraftwork set-up keys into his recurring theme of human endeavours and technology no longer needed or fully functioning in the modern world. Just as with his use of the ancient spinning discs of the IBM 1410 mainframe, the object is revivalism or retroism, but simply bearing witness to the past, to things that once brought pleasure or knowledge but now have no place. Which would all just be pretty words if it wasn't for the commitment of AAQ's performance. Before it's got halfway through, for all its skronkiness and wonkiness, this song soars.
