Yokai are ghosts or spirits who bring malevolence or mischief to those they encounter within Japanese folklore; unique ‘personifications of supernatural or unaccountable phenomena to their informants’ within Japanese tradition and the embodiment of our human fears, from natural disasters to the monster of death.

In 'Totoro', all of the yokai creatures seem to range from wary and elusive to friendly and helpful.
